History, Par and Length

Vall d’Or Golf initially opened as a nine-hole course in 1986. A further nine holes were added later. Today, it plays as a par 71 and measures 5,538 metres. That may sound moderate, but the round soon demonstrates that distance alone says little about the course’s actual difficulty.

Tight tee shots, elevated greens, bunkers, out-of-bounds areas and changing elevations can punish inaccurate decisions. Thoughtful course management is therefore worthwhile. On some holes, a hybrid or fairway wood may be a better choice than the driver if it leaves the next shot from a controlled position.

The Most Interesting Holes

The third hole is particularly well known. From the elevated tee, the view extends across Portocolom to the Mediterranean. This par five measures around 450 metres and runs steeply downhill. Long hitters may consider attacking the green with their second shot, but careful positioning is the better strategy for most players.

The second hole already shows how Vall d’Or plays. This par four is not especially long but is rated stroke index 1. Woodland borders the hole on the right, while the large, undulating green is well protected. Distance alone achieves little here. A safe tee shot onto the fairway creates far better conditions for the second shot.

The eighth hole is another example. This short dogleg to the left tempts players to cut the corner aggressively, but lakes and bunkers make the hole more tactically demanding than its length suggests. A controlled tee shot often provides the better angle into the green.

Patience is therefore required on the front nine. Before every tee shot, it helps to consider the following shot rather than focusing solely on the desired distance. Where do I want the ball to finish? From which side is the green easier to approach? Which hazards can I remove from play entirely? The 16th hole also demands a clear decision. At approximately 342 metres, this par four is manageable, but a deep bunker in front of the green punishes approaches that come up short. Players attacking the green should therefore choose a reliably safe distance rather than relying on a perfect shot with too little margin.

The closing hole is a long par three with an elevated green. Out of bounds waits on the left, a distinctive carob tree stands in front of the green, and the putting surface itself has clearly defined sections. A closing par feels thoroughly earned.

Vall d’Or suits a range of playing abilities. Good players can take a more aggressive approach to the course strategy and consistently exploit favourable angles. Mid-handicap golfers are usually better served by selectively removing risks. For recreational players, the main point is that not every hole needs to be reached in regulation.

Golfers with limited course experience should approach the round with realistic expectations. A safe tee shot, controlled lay-up and good short shot are often more effective than a risky attempt to force extra distance.
