Golf Luggage Can Quickly Add to the Cost of a Flight to Mallorca

Anyone flying to Mallorca for golf in 2026 should look beyond the ticket price when comparing flights. Taking your own golf bag can make a supposedly cheap flight considerably more expensive. Many airlines charge separately for sports equipment, weight limits vary significantly, and adding a golf bag at the airport can be very costly.

At Rent2Play.Golf, we regularly hear this from guests coming to play in Mallorca. The flight is booked, the hotel confirmed and the tee times reserved. Only then does the question arise: how much does it cost to take a golf bag on the plane? And how carefully will my expensive set be handled during loading?

A return flight can quickly cost more than €100, €160 or even €240 extra. Then there is the travel cover, carrying the bag through the airport, oversized baggage handling and the space it takes up in the rental car. Damage caused by improper handling is another risk.

It therefore makes sense to compare the options before booking your flight. If you leave your golf bag at home, you can rent high-quality golf clubs in Mallorca from Rent2Play.Golf. By arrangement, we deliver reserved sets to hotels, holiday accommodation, increasingly to yachts, or directly to golf courses, and collect them again after the final round.

What Do Airlines Charge for Golf Luggage in 2026?

The price differences are substantial. Depending on the underlying fare, Lufthansa and Austrian charge around €80 each way on European routes if the golf bag is not covered by the baggage allowance included in the booked fare. Comparable rules apply at SWISS.

Eurowings charges from around €50 each way for golf luggage weighing up to 32 kilograms. A return journey therefore costs at least about €100. The price can be considerably higher if the bag does not meet the applicable conditions.

Condor charges from €54.99 each way for Spain excluding the Canary Islands when the bag is registered in advance. If it is added at the airport, the charge can rise to €120 each way. The return cost then increases from €109.98 to €240.

Edelweiss is a notable exception. On certain flights operated by the airline itself, the first standard item of sports equipment weighing up to 23 kilograms may travel free of charge. The fare, route and operating airline remain decisive.

Lufthansa approx. €80 approx. €160 up to 32 kg depends on the booked fare

20 or 32 Kilograms Makes a Major Difference

The transport fee is not the only consideration. The permitted weight matters just as much. Ryanair and easyJet limit golf luggage to 20 kilograms. That may sound sufficient, but it can become tight once the travel cover is included.

A complete set with a driver, fairway woods, hybrid, irons, wedges, putter, cart bag, golf shoes, balls and travel cover can easily reach that limit. Even a few additional kilograms may result in excess baggage charges.

Eurowings permits up to 32 kilograms and Condor 30 kilograms. Many other airlines set the limit at 23 kilograms. There is another issue: some airlines do not allow passengers to place additional clothing or other travel items inside a golf bag. Checks at the check-in desk should therefore be expected.

  • Always weigh the golf bag together with the travel cover.
  • Check the rules of the airline actually operating the flight.
  • Pay particular attention to codeshare flights.
  • Book sports luggage online as early as possible.
  • Do not wait until check-in to discover excess weight.

Or avoid the issue entirely. Anyone who wants to travel light to Mallorca can bring only regular luggage and have a golf set delivered locally.

A Cheap Flight Often Stops Being Cheap Once a Golf Bag Is Added

With low-cost and holiday airlines in particular, sports luggage should be included in the initial price comparison. A return ticket for €90 may look attractive. Once €100 or €130 for golf luggage is added, the calculation changes.

With Condor, adding a golf bag at the airport can cost €240 for a return flight. For two golfers, that is €480 simply to transport their bags, before a single green fee has been paid.

From our perspective at Rent2Play.Golf, this is exactly when renting a set in Mallorca becomes worth considering. The comparison should not be: “How much does my flight cost?” It should be: “What does my entire trip cost with a golf bag? What risk does my set face, and which insurance would cover it?”

A golf bag may also require a larger rental car and involves handling two bulky travel covers. This affects the choice of vehicle, especially when several people travel together. Two golf bags, two large suitcases and hand luggage rarely fit comfortably into a small rental car.

If you want to play Golf de Andratx in the south-west and later Son Servera Golf Club on the east coast, for example, you will cover a considerable part of the island during your holiday. Without travel covers, there is much more room in the car.

What If the Golf Bag Does Not Arrive in Palma?

Another difference between bringing your own golf bag and reserving a rental set locally becomes clear on arrival. Checked golf luggage passes through several stages between check-in and baggage reclaim. Delays, loss and damage are rare, but extremely inconvenient for the affected golfer.

It is particularly frustrating when an early tee time is booked for the following morning. If the bag does not arrive in Palma on the same flight, the golf holiday begins with phone calls and baggage tracing instead of a relaxed first round.

For international flights, the Montreal Convention governs liability for baggage damage and loss. On 28 December 2024, the liability limit increased to 1,519 Special Drawing Rights per passenger. This amount is not paid automatically. The actual loss must be documented, and the limit applies to all affected baggage belonging to that passenger.

If baggage is damaged, document it at the airport immediately. Photographs, baggage tags and purchase receipts may become important later. These problems cannot be ruled out entirely while your own golf bag travels as checked baggage. The time spent dealing with them is too valuable to lose.

Rent Golf Clubs in Mallorca Instead of Transporting Them

This is where Rent2Play.Golf comes in. We give golf travellers the option of flying to Mallorca without their own golf bag while still playing with high-quality equipment.

Our range includes current TaylorMade and Callaway sets in several configurations. Right- or left-handed clubs, graphite or steel shafts, different models and even +1-inch options can be selected before the trip. Our page about renting golf clubs in Mallorca provides an overview.

If you prefer a current TaylorMade setup, you can, for example, rent the TaylorMade Qi4D in Mallorca. You will find further models in our selection of available rental sets.

The main difference from a traditional pro-shop rental is the logistics. You do not have to collect the set somewhere on the island after landing. By arrangement, we deliver directly to your hotel, finca, holiday apartment or golf course. After your final round, we arrange the return or collection to suit your travel plans. Your flexibility matters to us.

Hotel Delivery Instead of the Oversized Baggage Counter

For many of our customers, the difference is already apparent at Palma Airport. There is no travel cover to collect from oversized baggage reclaim, no heavy bag to carry to the rental car and no game of Tetris in the boot.

Instead, you travel to the hotel with regular luggage. Your reserved golf set can be provided there by arrangement. We explain the process in detail in our article about golf club delivery directly to your hotel.

This concept works particularly well at golf hotels. Guests staying at the Steigenberger Hotel & Resort Camp de Mar, for example, can play Golf de Andratx virtually on the doorstep while travelling without their own golf bag.

For an early first round, we recommend arranging delivery for the previous evening. This gives you time to inspect the driver, irons and putter at your leisure before heading directly to the course the next morning without another appointment.

How Does Renting Compare with Flying Your Clubs?

The correct calculation begins with the transport cost for both flights. Then consider how many days you will actually play golf. Someone spending seven days in Mallorca may play only three or four rounds, while the airline still charges the full golf baggage fee in both directions.

With rental clubs, you pay for the agreed rental period. For a current price guide, see our article How much does it cost to rent golf clubs in Mallorca?.

The difference becomes particularly interesting on short golf trips. If the airline charges €130 or €160 for your golf bag on a return journey, compare that amount directly with the cost of a high-quality rental set for the days you will actually play.

Price is only one part of the calculation. There is also the convenience, the extra space in the rental car and the certainty that your reserved set is already in Mallorca. You may even have the chance to try a new set, or at least have an excuse if the round does not go to plan.

The Calculation Becomes Even Clearer for Couples and Golf Groups

For two or four players, airline charges multiply quickly. Four golfers each paying €130 for golf luggage already face €520 in additional return-flight costs.

Four travel covers also require considerably more storage space than four regular suitcases. A larger estate car, SUV or van may therefore be necessary instead of a standard rental car. Golf groups should always calculate the entire transport chain.

The journey looks different with high-quality sets rented locally from us. The group flies to Palma with regular suitcases and travels to the hotel. The bags are delivered according to the agreed schedule. At Rent2Play.Golf, this flexibility is part of the service.

Comparing the Options Matters More Than Ever in 2026

The fee overview shows how differently airlines treat golf luggage. Transport may be free in some cases, but return charges of €100, €130, €160 or €240 are common. Late bookings can cost considerably more. Weight limits range from 20 to 32 kilograms, and airlines apply different rules to the contents and registration of sports luggage.

Before every golf trip to Mallorca, we therefore recommend a simple comparison: the flight price including golf luggage on one side, and travelling without a golf bag plus a rental set in Mallorca on the other.

If you mainly want to play golf rather than transport golf luggage, you can avoid the additional logistics.

Leave your golf bag at home. Fly to Mallorca. Reserve TaylorMade or Callaway golf clubs and have Rent2Play.Golf deliver them directly to your chosen location.
